The collaborative duo of Melford and Ehrlich (leader of the Dark Woods Ensemble and Traveler's Tales and a member of Melford's Extended Ensemble) explores their concepts of composition and improvisation in an intimate setting in which ideas and feelings are freely shared and musical boundaries ignored. They explore a wide ranging repertoire that draws from blues, soul, jazz standards, and pieces conceived for their ensembles, scaled down for their one-on-one dialogues.
Jazz Times critic Ron Wynn called their 2001 debut recording, Yet Can Spring (Arabesque), " the ultimate duet recording." "The CD features sizzling individual moments," he wrote, "thoughtful unison segments and eight thoroughly delightful numbers--three each from Melford and Ehrlich and one from Robin Holcomb, plus an unusual cover of blues great Otis Spann's "Don't You Know"
"Melford and Ehrlich share a studied, lyrical approach to freedom," wrote Michelle Mercer in Jazziz magazine, "and find as much exhilaration in simple melodies as they do in bold harmonic leaps."
